I am a female artist from a working-class background. Born in the East Midlands I now live in South-East London. I primarily work with images and am influenced by Modernist histories of radical, synesthetic approaches to making and thinking, and how these legacies mutate but persist in contemporary life. I am drawn to the formal qualities of colour, composition and rhythm and how relationships between these things can affect us. The sensual qualities of art-works and how they represent or relate to bodies is important to me.
Recently I have been making images that explore staging, sets and performance – often drawing from the history of Constructivist theatre and the Ukrainian Avant Garde. These images play with flatness, space, abstraction, staging, and the relationship between subject and viewer. I am drawn towards pictorial devices that induce perceptual uncertainty; such as playing with perspective, layering, jarring patterns, fragmentation and resonant colour relationships.
For example, current paintings, murals and prints suggest perspectival space but remain abstract, with fragmented figures intersecting planes and patterns. The poses of this chaotic chorus explore gendered readings of physicality and the power of gesture as tool of non-verbal communication.
My paintings are a type of visual choreography. They could be experienced as scores for, or documentation of, fictional performance. They are ways of communicating harmony, dissonance, rhythm, cacophony. Diverse approaches to mark making collide to suggest movement, tension, (in)balance. My works often speak to communal rituals that happen outside of everyday time and space.
Alongside my studio-based practice I occasionally produce writing, sound, and performance. These works explore the concerns outlined above but use fiction, poetry, script writing or song as a format – connecting to wider contexts in art and cultural history. My writing has often explored the aesthetics and ideologies informing art education; tensions between experience and documentation and the possibilities for synaesthetic approaches to learning. Beyond my practice I have lectured internationally, including institutions such as CSM, Chelsea, Camberwell, The Slade, University of Brighton, Norwich University of the Arts, Dutch Art Institute, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Academie of Applied Art Vienna, Royal Institute of Art Stockholm. I am currently a lecturer at Kingston School of Art, London. I also run an online Art Salon called SALOME SALMACIS which focuses on discussions with fellow artists and exploring the intersecting fields of painting and performance. In 2015 I received Arts Council Funding for PLAY SENSE; a project encompasing a sympoisum, exhibition and series of workshops exploring the relationship between Art, Education and Documentation.
