Statement

I'm a London based artist, originally from the East Midlands with Scottish and Ukrainian heritage. I explore the translation of images across painted, printed and drawn surfaces. My visual and cultural references emerge from diverse histories across art, experimental music and theatre, and pedagogy, with a lateral focus on synesthetic approaches to making and thinking. The sensual qualities of artworks and how they may represent or relate to bodies is important to me. This begins with the formal and affective power of image and pattern but expands to considerations of the materiality and curation of artworks. When I put an exhibition of work together I think about choreography, dynamics, narrative and affect.

Alongside my studio-based practice I occasionally produce writing, sound, and performance using poetry, script or song as a format. Rhythm, prosody and lyricism emphasize the sensual and physical aspects of language, where form and image catch. Texts explore the ways my personal experiences weave and clash with wider ideologies and cultural histories. Previous writing has explored: the mess of transplanted folk histories, pastoral aesthetics, and rural/suburban disaffection; how conflicting ideologies informing art education are embodied by students and tutors; reflections on the relentlessness of the artworld treadmill; as well as more academic explorations of embodied approaches to learning. My work is in numerous public and private collections in the UK, Europe and USA, and I have lectured internationally; including institutions such as CSM, Chelsea, Camberwell, The Slade, University of Brighton, Norwich University of the Arts, Dutch Art Institute, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Academie of Applied Art Vienna, Royal Institute of Art Stockholm. I am currently a lecturer at Kingston School of Art, London. I run an online Art Salon called SALOME SALMACIS which focuses on discussions with fellow artists and exploring the intersecting fields of painting and performance. In 2015 I received Arts Council Funding for PLAY SENSE; a project encompasing a sympoisum, exhibition and series of workshops exploring the relationship between Art, Education and Documentation.
